Telephones and Dialing Codes Spain
Dialling abroad
The international direct dial access code is 00.
Dial 00 plus the country code plus the area code and phone number. You will probably need to drop the '0' before the area code.
Example: To call UK number (area code) 01189 547308 would be 00 44 1189 547308
Dialling numbers in Spain
Telephone numbers to land lines all begin with a 9 and have 9 digits. Local calls always require the full 9 digit number.
Numbers beginning in 900 are freephone numbers
Numbers beginning in 901 are local call rate numbers
Numbers beginning in 902 are national call rate numbers
Numbers beginning in 906 are premium rate numbers
Mobile Phones
All mobile phone numbers begin with a 6. Mobiles can be on 'contract' or 'pay as you go', recharges being freely available from tobacconists and other retail outlets.
Telephone Booths
Telephone booths, cabinas telefónicas, , are still quite a common sight and take Euro and Cent coins.
Call Centres
At telephone call centres, you make the call from an individual cubicle and pay at the desk afterwards.
Public telephones are frequently to be found in bars. Whilst convenient, they are generally more expensive. To spot a phone in a bar, look for the television, the phone is strangely enough usually placed underneath it.
Telephone cards
'Telefonica' telephone cards, tarjetas teléfonicas, can be purchased from the tobacconist and the post office. These are inserted into the slot in the public phone. They do not offer cost saving but are more convenient than coins. Some telephones now only accept cards.
Many local and international telephone companies now offer discount telephone cards. These can be purchased at newsagents and other retail outlets. You do not place them in the phone but call a free-phone number and enter your card number.
