The Alps: The highest and the most fascinating mountains in Europe, the Alps separate Italy from France, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia. Almost all of the sunny southern slopes are in Italian territory. The highest peaks include Mont Blanc, Monte Rosa, the Cervino and the Gran Paradiso. In winter, the Italian Alps are unequaled for scenery and skiing. In northern Italy are some of the world's most renowned winter sports resorts, easily reached from such centers as Torino, chief city of the westernmost Piemonte region; from Milano, hub of the central mountain and lake district; and from Venezia, leading city of the eastern region. Skiing is also a summer sport in the Torino Alps and the lofty mountains surrounding the Valle d'Aosta.

The Aosta Valley is situated in the most mountainous region of Italy, entirely surrounded by the best known, splendid peaks of the Alps.

This typically Italian market town lies in a sunny valley right on the French border. Bardonecchia's skiing is challenging and enjoyable with 110km of piste, divided into two areas conveniently linked by a free shuttle service. Thanks to the fact that Bardonecchia hosted several events at the 2006 Olympics the resort now has a snow park and Olympic half pipe. Minimal lift queues add to the resort's appeal.

The typically Italian resort of Prato Nevoso is an ideal choice both for first-timers and for intermediate skiers wanting to improve those turns. Lying on the north-west facing slopes of the Maritime Alps the resort enjoys a good snow record and plenty of sunshine. Snowboarders are particularly well catered for in the Board Park which has a half pipe and is often illuminated in the evening too.

Home to some of the best skiing in the Milky Way, Sestriere is a magnet for ski lovers and a sophisticated resort with the latest amenities. Nestled in the renowned Milky Way, the resort is ideally placed to access a wide range of truly excellent slopes. Sestriere's own skiing is also pretty extensive, with its pistes divided into three main areas and connected via one of the most advanced mountain lift systems in the Alps.
