Midi-Pyrénées is the largest region of France by area, larger than the Netherlands or Denmark.
Apart from major sites such as Lourdes, Rocamadour, Montségur or the Pilgrim Roads to Santiago de Compostela, the very rich history of Midi-Pyrénées is an open-air treasure, a wide range of abbeys, convents, episcopal palaces, basilicas, chapels and cathedrals.
Midi-Pyrénées, a capital of feudality, is covered with traces of the glorious Middle Ages, with numerous forts (Château des comtes de Foix, Château de Montségur, Château de Belcastel, etc.) and splendid residences and townhouses dating from the Renaissance to the 18th century.

There are exciting opportunities for rock-climbing and caving. The endless roads and paths are perfect for walking, cycling, mountain biking and horse riding; everyone can explore the most beautiful landscapes in the South West at their own pace. Water sports enthusiasts are very well served here, with everything from canoeing to white-water rafting, while there is the whole expansive sky for flying, microlighting, hot-air ballooning and hang gliding.
Lourdes is a large town in the French Pyrenees. It is a global centre of Marian pilgrimage, receiving hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. Roman Catholics believe that Mary, the Mother of God, appeared 18 times at the Grotto to a young girl, Bernadette Soubirous. Originally a sleepy market town on the road to the spas of the Pyrenees, Lourdes has grown into the largest Marian pilgrimage centre in the world.
