In 1972, Austria began the construction of a nuclear-powered electricity-generation station at Zwentendorf on the River Danube, following a unanimous vote in parliament.
However, in 1978, a referendum showed approximately 50.5% of all Austrian citizens were against nuclear power, and parliament subsequently passed a law forbidding the use of nuclear power to generate electricity.
Today, Austria currently produces more than half of its electricity by hydropower, together with other renewable energy sources such as wind, solar and biomass power plants. Power supplied from renewable energy, amounts to nearly 80% of the total power consumption in Austria. The remaining demand is produced by conventional gas and oil power plants.
